Challenges of Finding a Surrogate

What to Know About Independent Surrogacy

There are two challenges to overcome when finding a surrogate on your own.

1: Finding a Surrogate is Hard

This is why 90% of intended parents turn to surrogacy agencies. While locating a surrogate through friends, online forums, or other means is possible, this process demands significant time and effort. You’ll often find yourself competing with other couples, making the search both challenging and frustrating.  You just need to decide if this is part of the process you wish to manage.

2: Screening a Surrogate is Crucial and Complex

Once you’ve identified a potential surrogate, she must undergo rigorous screening to ensure she qualifies. Only 2% of interested surrogates pass these stringent criteria, meaning 1 in 50 candidates will qualify.  You will need a surrogacy agency to help you screen your surrogate.

With many professionals handling the screening, you risk:

  • Spending thousands of dollars on unqualified candidates.
  • Enduring repeated delays and emotional setbacks.

Our team simplifies this process, helping you avoid wasted time and money. In fact, we offer initial surrogate screenings for free, ensuring you don’t invest unnecessarily in candidates who won’t initially qualify.

Avoiding Pitfalls in Surrogate Screening

Numerous factors can disqualify a potential surrogate even when working with someone you know and trust. With over 150 common disqualifying factors, the screening process is more complex than it seems. Below are some key reasons why surrogates may not qualify:

Medical Complications

  • Pregnancy-related health issues.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Medications incompatible with fertility treatments.

Psychological Factors

  • Mental health history, past or present.
  • Past traumas that could impact the process.
  • Current life stressors or instability.
  • Relationship and family support.
  • Home environment suitability.

Practical Challenges

  • Insurance that doesn’t cover surrogacy-related needs.
  • Unstable or unsuitable living conditions.
  • Limitations on travel for medical appointments.
  • Work schedules that conflict with surrogacy requirements.

The Costs of Failed Screening

When a surrogate doesn't pass screening, families burden these costs:

  • Most surrogacy agency’s psychological and social assessment screening costs $5- 10K per surrogate.

  • Your Fertility medical screening costs range from $3-10K (check with your clinic).

  • Legal contract fees range from $3 - 10K depending on location.

Time Impact on Your Journey
