While wanting to help couples and individuals become parents is a noble endeavor at any age, not everyone is within our surrogate age limit. These age limits exist to ensure that you and the baby you’re carrying are healthy throughout the surrogacy journey.
We respect your desire to want to help create families but your safety and the safety of the intended parents’ baby is our top priority. Even if you’re slightly over our surrogate age limit, there’s a chance we could still work with you if you’re medically cleared by a fertility clinic.

What is The Surrogate Age Limit?
There are a few basic requirements for surrogacy you should be aware of, including our surrogate age limit. These requirements are set by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. The requirements for surrogacy include:
-
Age 21-40
-
At least one successful pregnancy
-
No more than five vaginal births or three caesarean births
-
Currently raising a child
-
No major complications from previous pregnancies
-
No felony convictions
In addition to these requirements, you will also need to go through the surrogate screening process. This will include a social and medical form about you and your family’s health history, background checks, in-home assessment and medical evaluation. This process can take some time, but we want you to be knowledgeable about the process and ready to move forward when you’re ready.
How Old is Too Old to Be a Surrogate?
Determining an age limit for surrogate eligibility involves a nuanced consideration of various factors, and opinions on how old is "too old" can vary. Generally, however, most reproductive health experts agree that a surrogate's age exceeding the early 40s may raise significant concerns.
Our maximum age to be a surrogate is 40 years old. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) recommends surrogates between the ages of 21-45.
While we take individual health and fitness into account when determining your surrogate eligibility, setting a surrogate age limit helps us balance the desire to assist others in building families and the importance of prioritizing your health.
Why is There a Surrogate Age Limit?
Pregnancy after 40 can come with an increase in health risks for both you and the baby. Later-in-life pregnancies are associated with an increased likelihood of various health complications. This is why we have a surrogate age limit. It can be difficult for some women over the age of 40 to have a healthy delivery. Some of the other risks associated with being over the surrogate age requirement include:
-
Preeclampsia
-
Gestational diabetes
-
Premature birth
-
Miscarriage
-
Down syndrome or other genetic disorders
-
Stillbirth
The physiological changes that accompany aging, such as decreased fertility and a decline in overall health, can further exacerbate these risks.
