The Surrogate Application Process [5 Steps You’ll Take]
The surrogate application process is designed to protect the safety and well-being of everyone involved. We know it can feel overwhelming, but we’ll be there to guide you through every step to make it as straightforward as possible.
Below are five steps you can expect to take to apply to be a surrogate:
1. Fill out a social medical form
When you apply to be a surrogate, this step provides essential details about your medical history, lifestyle and personal information. Social medical forms ensure you’re physically healthy enough for surrogacy. Your specialist will request things like:
-
A front and back picture of your insurance card and your insurance policy manual
-
A copy of your driver’s license
-
A signed medical release for us to access your medical records from past pregnancies and deliveries
-
A surrogacy recommendation from your OB/GYN
To receive a social medical form, fill out our contact form to connect with a specialist.
2. Collect medical records
Before you can officially become a surrogate, we will need to request your medical records from past pregnancies and deliveries. These records will be reviewed by our on-staff labor and delivery nurse to confirm that this is a safe option for you.
This is often one of the longest steps of the surrogate application process, so it’s encouraged to get started on this step as soon as you can. We’ll help coordinate this step to ensure the planning and timing goes as smoothly as possible. Our goal is to help you get on the right track toward a smooth, stress-free experience.
“The screening process that I went through with American Surrogacy made me feel safe. They made me feel like they cared not only about the child I was going to give birth to but myself.” – Testimonial from surrogate mother.
3. Schedule an in-home visit
When you apply to be a surrogate, part of the surrogate application process includes an in-home visit. This is one of the best ways to ensure your home is safe and stable to support the development of the intended parent’s baby. During the visit, we’ll talk to everyone in your household to confirm your readiness and commitment to the surrogacy process. We’ll discuss things like:
-
What motivated you to become a surrogate
-
Fears or concerns you may have about the process
-
How committed your spouse is to the process (if applicable)
-
And more.
During this step of the surrogate application process, we will also run general and specific background checks (including social media checks) on you and your spouse.
4. Complete a psychological evaluation
The psychological evaluation is an important step of the surrogate mother application process. You and your spouse will work with a mental health professional to ensure that you’re mentally and emotionally prepared for the surrogate journey. During the screening process, you’ll be asked about:
-
Your motivations for surrogacy
-
Any emotions that you may feel about the process
-
Your family’s support of your decision
When you apply to be a surrogate, you’ll also fill out a personality assessment test (such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory test or the Personality Assessment Inventory test) to help us understand how your personality and coping mechanisms may affect your surrogacy journey. Your mental health professional will walk you through potential situations to help you prepare for any difficulties that may occur along the way.
5. Go through an insurance review
This is one of the last steps of the surrogate application process. We know that navigating insurance policies can be difficult and overwhelming, but we’ll be there to walk you through every step. We’ll determine:
-
If a surrogate pregnancy and delivery is covered by your insurance
-
Whether a supplement plan is needed, provided by the intended parents
-
If your surrogacy plan includes a surrogacy exclusion
If you don’t have insurance, don’t worry. You can still apply to be a surrogate and we will find you families who can help provide you with a surrogate-friendly plan.
How Long Does it Take to Become a Surrogate?
Once you apply to be a surrogate and submit the surrogate application form, we’ll reach out to you immediately. If everything looks good from there, we’ll set up a Zoom call to move forward with the surrogacy process. The surrogate application processing time takes a couple of days.
After your surrogate application is approved, here’s what you can expect the surrogate timeline to look like:
-
Initial Screening: 1-3 months
-
Matching Process: 3-6 months
-
Medical Screening: 1-2 months
-
Legal Contract: 1-2 months
-
Embryo Transfer: 1-2 months
-
Pregnancy: 9 months
The surrogacy journey can last an average of 1-2 years. This timeline ensures the best possible outcomes for both you and the intended parents. Although it can feel overwhelming, know that in the end, you’ll be able to earn meaningful income for your family while also helping a deserving couple become parents.
