Ensuring you and the baby you’re carrying as a surrogate are safe and healthy is our top priority as a surrogacy agency. That’s why we ask that all our surrogates adhere to requirements based on standards set by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).
Having a history of bipolar disorder falls under criteria that will disqualify you from surrogacy with our agency.
While you may not qualify for surrogacy, if you know anyone who is interested in becoming a surrogate and meets our requirements, you can earn a $5,000 referral fee through our surrogate referral program.
Can I Be a Surrogate if I Have Bipolar?
Unfortunately, no. If you are diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you will not be able to become a surrogate.
Increased hormonal activity during pregnancy often results in mood swings which may exacerbate mood disorders like bipolar disorder, which is characterized by extreme mood swings between intense emotional highs and lows. The combination of pregnancy hormones and the mood instability of bipolar can make pregnancy mentally unsafe.
The well-being of our surrogates is our top priority, and our requirements exist to protect your physical and mental health, and by extension, the health of the child that they carry.
Being a surrogate means carrying a baby for someone else who has been waiting for the chance to become parents and we want to do everything we can to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
Can I Be a Surrogate on Medication for Bipolar Disorder?
No. Our surrogate qualifications require that any prospective surrogate be off antidepressants for at least 12 months. This is a contributing factor as to why we do not work with surrogates who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Without medication, there's an increased risk of manic and/or depressive episodes.
What Can I Do if I Don't Qualify?
We recognize your desire to help others experience the joys of parenthood and understand the frustration you might feel learning that you don't qualify to become a surrogate. Our qualifications are designed to protect you, the baby and the intended parents.
If you know anyone who wants to become a surrogate and might qualify, you can refer them to us and earn a $5,000 referral fee. Check out our referral program to learn more.
