As a family planning agency, we understand that pregnancy doesn’t always happen how or when we plan for it. Having an abortion is a personal choice, and in some cases, medically necessary.
Your ability to make decisions based on your circumstances, values and aspirations is a testament to your autonomy and courage. As you pursue surrogacy, know that your past choices do not diminish your capacity for compassion, love, and the incredible gift you are offering to others.
However, there are also some situations where if you have had a medically necessary abortion, surrogacy may not be the right path for you.

Can I Be a Surrogate if I’ve Had an Abortion?
Yes. If you’ve had an elective abortion in the past, you can still become a surrogate! Abortions are safe and simple medical procedures that pose no risk to the patient or their reproductive health. Our surrogate requirements will not prevent you from becoming a surrogate if you’ve previously had an abortion as a result of an unplanned pregnancy.
However, two abortion-related scenarios will be taken into consideration.
Your Abortion was Medically Necessary
A medically necessary abortion is an abortion that is done in an emergent situation for the health and safety of the pregnant patient. If you had to terminate a previous pregnancy because complications that put your or the baby’s health or your life at risk, this may hinder your chances of becoming a surrogate.
One of the main requirements for surrogates is not having any major complications in previous pregnancies. Our requirements are based on standards set by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and are to protect the well-being of everyone involved in the surrogacy process.
Your health and safety are our top priority, as well as that of the baby. Many of the intended parents pursuing surrogacy may have reproductive issues of their own and have waited a long time to have this child. We want to ensure they’re able to do so without putting their future child at risk.
Every situation is different, so if you want to become a surrogate after an abortion for medical intervention, contact us today so we can help you determine if you’re eligible for surrogacy.
You Have Not Had At Least One Successful Pregnancy
If you have had an elective abortion because you weren’t ready to become a parent or did not want to be a parent, and have had no children since, will not be eligible for surrogacy. Our surrogate qualifications ask that our surrogates have had at least one successful pregnancy. This is to assure that you can safely carry a baby to term, and have an understanding of pregnancy and childbirth.
We also ask that our surrogates are currently raising a child. This is to ensure that once you’ve given birth and the intended parents have taken their baby home, you feel fulfilled returning home from the hospital to your child(ren).
Becoming a Surrogate After an Abortion
Many women who have gone through an abortion have gone on to have healthy pregnancies. If you've had an abortion, it doesn’t mean you are not capable of having healthy pregnancies afterward. We are happy to work with surrogates who have gone through an abortion in the past. What is important is that there were no previous major complications from pregnancies and that they are currently raising their child.
