Embryo Genetic Testing Costs

Genetic testing costs, otherwise known as PGT, come in two forms: PGT-A and PGT-M. Either way, PGT costs are worthwhile because it makes your IVF journey more cost-effective.

Embryo genetic testing offers invaluable insights into the health and viability of your embryos, helping to increase the chances of your surrogate becoming pregnant with your baby. Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) comes with an additional cost, but that cost could vary depending on the professional that you work with.

How Much Does Embryo Genetic Testing Cost?

Embryo genetic testing costs will vary from professional to professional, and which type of PGT you pursue. There are two main types of PGT and two respective costs to consider. Here’s what both types of PGT costs may look like:

Embryo Genetic Testing Costs: PGT-A and PGT-M

Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies (PGT-A), formerly known as preimplantation genetic screening (PGS), costs around $2,000-$5,000 per IVF cycle. PGT-A is used in conjunction with IVF to screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before implantation.

PGT-A can improve the success rates of IVF by ensuring that only genetically healthy embryos are implanted, ultimately leading to better outcomes for prospective parents..

Preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic (PGT-M) disorders is usually more expensive averaging around $7,000-$12,000. PGT-M tests for mutations in a single gene that can cause disorders like:

  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Hemophilia

Both types of embryo testing costs will vary depending on your lab, but it generally costs $350-$500 per embryo plus shipping fees.

What Is Included in the Cost of Embryo Genetic Testing?

There are various services and resources that factor into the overall cost of the genetic testing of embryos. For instance, the cost of PGT includes aspects such as:

  • Biopsies

  • The number of embryos being tested

  • Clinic fees

  • Reference laboratory fees

  • And more

PGT costs may seem steep at first glance, but they are worthwhile because they make your IVF journey more cost-effective, by reducing the chances of you and your surrogate having to do multiple transfer cycles.

Is Genetic Testing on Embryos Worth It?

The answer to this depends on your unique circumstances. For example, genetic testing on embryos can increase your chances of a successful surrogate pregnancy. It could also be worth it if you have a predisposition to genetic disorders, as PGT-A can detect chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome.

Through genetic testing, you can choose the sex of the embryo, as well. Also, surrogates often prefer to carry for couples that have had their embryos genetically tested, as this tells them that the embryos are viable. This means a higher chance of success, which for her means she won’t have to go through multiple transfer cycles.

Once your embryos are viable and ready for transfer, we can help you find a surrogate in as little as 1-6 months. You can view surrogate profiles here.

If you’re still in the embryo creation or PGT process, you can contact us to begin filling out our surrogacy planning questionnaire so that you’re ready to be matched once you have embryos for transfer.
