Can Surrogates Have a Home Birth?

Home births have become relatively popular amongst women looking to have a personalized birth experience. While our agency does not have a firm stance on this decision, we generally leave it up to the agreement between surrogates and the intended parents.

Some parents may not feel comfortable with the idea of birth outside a hospital where medical interventions are readily available. However, if you are a surrogate who wants a home birth, we may be able to match you with parents who are okay with this.

Birthing Centers for Surrogates

If you are not comfortable with a hospital birth and can’t find parents who are okay with a home birth, a good middle ground could be a birthing center.

The environment is more homey and less “sterile” feeling than a hospital to help you feel more at ease and comfortable. You can also work closely with a midwife to help you plan your ideal birthing plan.

Birthing centers may also have access to a hospital should any issues arise during labor and delivery. Surrogates who use a birthing center may have better luck finding intended parents to work with.

Preparing for a Home Birth

If you are a surrogate choosing to have a home birth, you may want to begin preparations early so you and the intended parents are all on the same page. Some preparations you can do include:

  • Take childbirth classes specifically for home births

  • Create a birth plan

  • Hire a certified professional midwife

  • Get the birth supplies needed as recommended by your midwife

  • Walk through your home and consider the best place to have the birth

  • Prepare your home for postpartum

  • Pack a hospital bag (just in case)
