You’re likely familiar with pregnancy-related medical bills from your previous pregnancies. But when it’s not your baby, who pays medical bills for a surrogate pregnancy?

We answer these questions and give insight into how these are paid out to surrogates. If you have questions about surrogate medical bills or surrogate compensation and reimbursement, contact us today.

Who Pays Surrogate Medical Bills?

In short, you will never have to pay for any part of the surrogacy process. In addition to the base pay you will receive, you will be reimbursed for all surrogate medical bills and surrogacy-related expenses.. Once you sign your surrogacy contract, you will receive a monthly stipend for any out-of-pocket expenses before you begin the medical process. You’ll continue receiving this stipend 6-8 weeks after delivery.

Health Insurance

If you do not have health insurance or your insurance plan doesn’t cover surrogate pregnancy, we’ll help connect you with a policy that does. Regardless of your insurance situation, you will not have to pay for any portion of the medical process.

Surrogate Compensation Package

Your surrogate compensation is divided into two parts: base pay and additional expenses. Your base compensation is yours to spend however you choose. It’s essentially your salary for your work as a surrogate and you will never be required to spend it on your surrogacy process.

You will also receive other payments to cover things like copays, medications and more. There are multiple medical processes and bills associated with surrogacy, but you will never use your own money to pay for them. These will be paid for through your surrogate compensation package. Some of the surrogate medical expenses you can expect include:

  • Doctor visit copays

  • Prenatal vitamins

  • Medications

  • Fertility treatments

  • Embryo transfer

  • Labor and Delivery

Surrogate Postpartum Care

Every surrogate’s postpartum care is going to be slightly different based on their labor and delivery. For surrogates who go through vaginal delivery vs a C-section, you may expect different care and a different recovery timeline. There will be payments for postpartum medical bills through an escrow service from the parents for up to six months of postpartum care. Know you will be safely covered, and the details will be disclosed in your surrogacy contract that you will agree upon before the medical process.
